What is the “Outstanding” Tiny Desk meme?

By · Updated

NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts film big artists playing behind a desk in a small office. One clip from Charlie Wilson’s 2023 set took on a life of its own: the band hits the chorus of “Outstanding”, the camera cuts to the singer laughing with pure joy, then to a saxophone solo with the player’s eyes closed, then back to the whole band singing along. It became a reaction meme for anything that went better than expected.

In the fall of 2026 people started putting their own faces into it. A friend becomes the laughing singer, the group chat fills the backup seats, the dog-walker gets the sax solo. The result is posted with a caption about the thing that was “outstanding”.

Our generator makes the same cut with your photos. Each shot with someone in it is redrawn around that person, so their face stays the same while they laugh, sing and play. Seats you leave empty keep our own AI musicians.

How to make a Tiny Desk AI video

Upload a clear photo for the lead singer: that is the only seat you must fill. Add someone for the sax solo if you like, and up to three more people for the band: the keyboard player and the two backup singers at the ends of the back row. Tick the two boxes and press Generate.

We redraw every shot that has one of your people in it. The lead’s close-up, the sax solo and the band shot are each made separately, so every face stays sharp, and the shots are then cut together on the beat of the song. The video takes about six to twelve minutes. You can close the page: it keeps rendering, we email you when it’s ready (you can switch that off), and it waits for you under My videos.

Who sits where

  1. 01

    Lead singer

The laughing close-up in the middle of the clip, the shot everyone remembers. Required.

  2. 02

    Sax player

The saxophone solo, seen from the side with eyes closed. Optional and included in the price.

  3. 03

    Keys and backup singers

The band shot at the start and the end: the keyboard player in front and the backup singers at each end of the back row. Optional, for one flat extra charge.

Tips for a better Tiny Desk video

  • Use a sharp, well-lit photo where the face is big and looks at the camera. Selfies work well.
  • One person per photo. Group photos confuse the seat.
  • No sunglasses, masks or heavy filters, so the face stays the same through the laugh.
  • Clothes come from the photo, so a plain top looks the most natural in the room.

Ideas for posting it

  • Make the friend who just got the job the laughing lead: “when the offer letter says outstanding”.
  • Put the whole group chat in the band for a birthday or a farewell.
  • Post the silent copy and add the sound from the app’s library if your platform mutes the song.
  • Turn on the platform’s AI-generated label. TikTok, Instagram and YouTube ask for it on realistic AI video.

What you get

  • A 15-second MP4, vertical 9:16, at 720p, ready for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
  • Two files: one with the song, and a silent copy.
  • The finished video saved in your account to download again later.
  • A price of 120 credits with the lead (and sax), plus 40 credits if you fill any band seat; an automatic refund if generation fails.

This is a parody tool made by fans of the meme. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by NPR, Tiny Desk Concerts, Charlie Wilson or The Gap Band. “Tiny Desk” is a trademark of NPR. The song “Outstanding” belongs to its rights holders; platforms may mute it, which is why every video also comes as a silent copy.

Only upload photos of people who agreed to it, and do not use the video to mislead anyone or to advertise.

Do you have to label AI videos on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram?

Yes, for realistic ones. A BlinkPop video puts a real face into a scene that never happened, which is exactly what the platforms ask you to disclose. Here is what each one says in its own words:

“We require creators to disclose AI-generated or altered content that seems realistic.”

— YouTube Help, Disclosing use of GenAI content

“The policy requires people to label AI-generated content that contains realistic images, audio or video, in order to help viewers contextualize the video and prevent the potential spread of misleading content.”

— TikTok Newsroom, New labels for disclosing AI-generated content

“We will still display the "AI info" label for content we detect was generated by an AI tool.”

— Meta Newsroom, Our Approach to Labeling AI-Generated Content and Manipulated Media

In practice: switch on the platform's AI-generated label (or add "made with AI" to the caption) whenever you post a BlinkPop video, and only use photos of people who agreed to it.

FAQ

How many people can be in the video?

Up to five: the lead singer, the sax player, the keyboard player and the two backup singers at the ends of the back row. Only the lead is required; empty seats keep our AI musicians.

How much does it cost?

120 credits for the lead singer, with the sax player included. Filling any band seat (keys or backup singers) adds 40 credits once, however many of the three you fill. If the video fails, the credits go straight back to your account.

How long does it take?

Usually six to twelve minutes, because each shot is made separately. You can leave the page: we email you when the video is ready, and it waits for you under My videos.

Does it have the song?

Yes, the video comes with the “Outstanding” chorus from the clip, and as a silent copy. If TikTok or Instagram mutes the song, post the silent copy and add the sound from the app’s library.

Is this made by NPR or Tiny Desk?

No. It is a parody tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by NPR, Tiny Desk Concerts, Charlie Wilson or The Gap Band. “Tiny Desk” is NPR’s trademark.

Can I use a photo of a celebrity or a stranger?

No. Only use photos of yourself or of people who agreed to it, and do not use the video to mislead anyone or to advertise. Photos of children are not accepted.

What happens to my photos?

They are only used to make your video. The finished video stays in your account until you delete it, and you can ask support to delete your photos at any time.
